Hardware support : Printing/Scanning improvement
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Found a few diffs that could help improving scanning/printing support, therefore I thought it could be a good idea to centralize all activities around this in a task to ease the followup.

  • D46 canon-ufriilt-common
  • D341 hplip
  • D530 cups-filters
  • D774 sane-backends
  • D809 cups WORK IN PROGRESS
  • D814 cups-pk-helper (just a minor update)
  • D815 split hplip GUI into a sub-package

Would it actually make sense to have these packages included in a new .ISO? I remember having to install hplip to get one of my printers to work. Alternatively, by improving the help center users could be pointed toward what packages they need to install to get their hardware to work.

Would massively inflate the size of the ISO from what I can see.. Have to find out. Let's get these patches merged today and investigate the size difference

What about removing Thunderbird from the ISO to make space for hplip and other software which is more useful in a live session? Anyone who does not use online email just has to install Thunderbird from Software Centre after they finish installing Solus.

I don't think removing Thunderbird is reasonable.

I also don't think its reasonable. So hplip is the single biggest offender right now - because it depends on all the pyqt stuff and qt5-webkit and such. I could include the other bits, or parts of hplip by splitting the GUI out into a subpackage.

Things are now improved for Budgie with: rIMGB30f88b517e8b: Improve hardware support in the Budgie ISO for T4258

Gonna need to do the same for GNOME/MATE ISOs

This might eventually help some users https://sourceforge.net/projects/cups-bjnp/ but tbh I have no clue if these printers are quite common or rather rare.

Yeah I'm looking ideally to defer the use of drivers to the driverless printing implementation - so that we stop packaging them all up :)

that would be great, indeed !

So do we see CUPS as blocking this issue.. ?

I gets build, but I think some more work on the package is required but without a printer it's not easy to check.
Need to check if ownership/permissions are okay

ikey claimed this task.

OK well in that case I'm gonna close this issue as resolved and start focusing on the other issues

okay can be done afterwards anyway...
